Parent Tip: "This program was a huge help with our daughter. Once we received the Missouri Children with Developmental Disabilities Waiver (MOCDD), also known as the Sarah Lopez Waiver, she was eligible for a caregiver through Self-Directed Care. The application is extremely lengthy and required regular follow up with our support coordinator with Abilities First (this entity name will change in different areas) who submitted and handled the application for us. This program gives you a budget to manage all year so you get to determine what to pay the caregiver and how many hours they work. You can hire friends, family or whomever you wish. We reached out to local colleges and networked in our church to find caregivers. We interviewed them and had several wonderful people. I provided all the training and also got to choose if I wanted more trainings to be required of them. The paperwork process is pretty involved for them but for us, all the work was worth it!"
